WHO WE ARE
What to See in Lucca: A Practical Guide for Your Stay
Lucca is one of those cities that truly surprises you. Away from the busiest routes of Tuscany, it has preserved its medieval layout, its towers, its quiet squares, and a gentle rhythm of life that invites you to slow down. From Madame Fanny, we are just a 10‑minute walk from the historic centre — close enough to reach it easily, yet far enough to enjoy peace and quiet. This guide brings together the places and experiences we recommend to our guests every day.
The Walls of Lucca
Lucca’s Renaissance walls are among the best preserved in Europe: built between the 16th and 17th centuries, they stretch for 4.2 km and can still be walked or cycled in their entirety. Along the top of the walls you’ll find tree‑lined avenues, benches, and viewpoints overlooking the historic centre. It’s the ideal starting point to get your bearings and understand the shape of the city.
Practical tip: bicycles can be rented at several points near the city gates. A full loop of the walls takes about 30–40 minutes by bike, or around one hour at a relaxed walking pace.
Piazza dell'Anfiteatro
Lucca’s most distinctive square is built directly over the foundations of a Roman amphitheatre dating back to the 2nd century AD. Its original oval shape is still perfectly visible in the outline of the surrounding buildings. At the centre, cafés and restaurants set out their tables outdoors. It is one of the most photographed squares in Tuscany — and with good reason.
Medieval Towers and Churches
Lucca once had more than one hundred towers; today, around forty remain. The most famous is the Guinigi Tower, rising 44 metres and crowned with a small rooftop garden of centuries‑old holm oaks: from the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view over the entire city and the surrounding hills. Another atmospheric tower is the Torre delle Ore, which still houses the mechanism of the city’s historic clock.
Among the churches, the Cathedral of San Martino preserves the Volto Santo, one of the most venerated medieval crucifixes in Italy. The Church of San Michele in Foro, built over the ancient Roman forum, features one of the most elaborate Romanesque façades in the region. The Church of San Frediano, with its golden mosaic on the façade, is an unmissable landmark for anyone visiting Lucca.
Markets, Shops, and Local Life
Lucca’s historic centre is still very much lived in by its residents — it’s not just an open‑air museum. Every third Sunday of the month, an antiques market fills Piazza San Giusto and the surrounding streets: a must‑visit for anyone who loves vintage objects, second‑hand books, and unique finds.
For everyday shopping, the Carmine Market (an indoor market) is a favourite among locals. For an aperitivo or dinner, the liveliest streets are Via Fillungo — the city’s main historic shopping street — and the lanes around Piazza San Michele.
Day Trips from Lucca
Lucca is an ideal base for exploring northern Tuscany and beyond.
Pisa — 25 minutes by car or train. Piazza dei Miracoli, with the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, and the Baptistery, is one of the most important monumental complexes in Italy. Arriving early in the morning helps avoid the crowds.
Florence — 1 hour and 20 minutes by train. The Uffizi Gallery, the Cathedral, and the Ponte Vecchio: one day is not enough, but even half a day is worth the trip.
Viareggio and the Versilia Coast — 30 minutes by car. The Versilia coastline offers beaches, a long seaside promenade, and, in summer, one of the liveliest beach scenes in Italy.
Garfagnana and the Mediavalle — 40 minutes by car heading north. One of Tuscany’s most beautiful Apennine valleys, home to the thermal town of Bagni di Lucca — site of the first casino in Europe — as well as medieval villages, chestnuts, truffles, and hiking trails in the Apuan Alps.
Collodi — 20 minutes by car. Birthplace of Carlo Lorenzini, the author of Pinocchio. The Pinocchio Park is ideal for families, while Villa Garzoni with its baroque garden and the Butterfly House is well worth a visit for everyone.
Cinque Terre — about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Reachable by car as far as La Spezia, then by ferry or train. In high season, it’s best to book hiking trails in advance.
Unmissable Events
Lucca Summer Festival (July): an international‑level music festival featuring concerts by world‑renowned artists in the city’s historic squares. Past performers have included the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Depeche Mode, Jennifer Lopez, and many others.
Lucca Comics & Games (late October / early November): one of the largest festivals in Europe dedicated to comics, gaming, and pop culture. The entire city transforms: tens of thousands of visitors, cosplayers, exhibitions, and presentations. If you plan to stay during this period, book several months in advance.
Settembre Lucchese: a month‑long festival of classical music, theatre, and local traditions held throughout September.
Where to Eat in Lucca — Local Recommendations
Lucchese cuisine is different from Florentine cuisine: simpler, more restrained, and based on high‑quality local ingredients. Typical dishes include tordelli lucchesi (filled pasta with ragù), spelt from Garfagnana, lardo di Colonnata, and buccellato, a traditional sweet bread with figs and raisins.
Practical tip: avoid restaurants with laminated menus and photos of the dishes — they are often tourist traps. Look instead for trattorias without bright signs, with a chalkboard by the door and a mostly local clientele. When you arrive at Madame Fanny, we will share our up‑to‑date recommendations for our favourite places in the area.
Staying at Madame Fanny means having a peaceful base, guaranteed parking, and someone who truly knows the city — not only its main attractions, but also the streets and corners that don’t appear in guidebooks. We are a 10‑minute walk from the historic centre, with three rooms renovated in 2024 and rates starting from €90 per night.
